About 50km northeast of Zanzibar Island (more accurately, ‘Unguja’) lies the archipelago’s second largest island, Pemba.
Pemba has forever been Zanzibar’s most green and fertile isle.
Separated by the Pemba channel from its larger sister, Zanzibar to the south, the small island of Pemba is part of the Zanzibar archipelago of islands that run north from Dar es Salaam.
With a fraction of the tourism, much fuller vegetation and some of the best diving in the world, there is good reason that many of the more intrepid try and come here for a few days in the sun!
However, most visitors to Zanzibar never make it to Pemba and the island remains far quieter than its big brother Unguja.
Vous Hotels & Retreats is pleased to introduce the development of a new luxury 24 villas retreat on the north east peninsula of the island, a 350 hectars nature reserve.
Located on Pemba Island, part of Tanzania’s Zanzibar (Unguja) Archipelago, off the coast of East Africa. Part of the Micheweni district and the exact location is Mbuyuni beach and Ras Kiuyu forest.
The entire reserve has a magnifcent pristine landscape with forest, baobab trees, beautiful beaches and clear waters. The hotel aims to protect, sustain and support the area by developing and managing a totally sustainable destination that becomes part of its surroundings, the environment and local community.
‘ The entire estate has a magnificent landscape unique to this area, pristine beaches and sea, forest, space and privacy ’
The site is one of the prominent forests in Zanzibar (Unguja) archipel, In the recent years it has sadly been reduced in size due to farmers making clearings for farmland/crops and using the timber for frewood and construction.
A major part of the development project is to regrow the forest and protect the area. The distribution of the Baobab tree, although originating from Madagascar, are prevalent on Pemba and the northern peninsula and an integral part of the land and retreat.
The natural surroundings and landscapes will be used as part of backdrop with key views. There is a big socio-economical aspect to the proposal, for the local community, better roads (and a new airstrip), improved irrigation for more varied farming and crops, composting, and promoting sustainable fishing, protect marine life, mangrove and coral reefs, seaweed farming.
‘ A hilly green island, a tranquil hideaway with some of the best dive sites in the world ’
The destination in summary:
350 hectares 24 Villas (One, Two and Three bedrooms) 2 Restaurants, 2 Bars, Living room, Library Cooking school and shop Botanical gardens, organic vegetable garden, tree nursery Outdoor events spaces Sui Wellbeing Outdoor pool and pool bar Beaches, dive centre, pier
A destination for the ‘Conscientious Traveller’ and the ‘Passionate Nature Lover’. Nestled on the waters of the Indian Ocean, Pemba Island is the crown jewel of the Zanzibar archipelago.
Micheweni Retreat aims to showcase and preserve the intricate wonders of this spectacular island, taking an eco-sensitive approach to developing a luxurious, private beach retreat.
The Founder promotors commitment to sustainability and environmental protection is not only embodied in the scale of the proposed project, but in their mission to ensure a sanctuary for endangered plant and animal species endemic to the island.
Award winning architecture and design studio Michaelis Boyd, London had created the concept design. With only twenty-four spacious villas to be constructed from locally sourced and renewable materials, Micheweni Resort will be a model for carbon-neutral development and a partner to leverage economic development opportunities among native villagers. Micheweni will emerge as a destination for the conscientious traveller.
Micheweni Foundation, the resort’s philanthropic wing is aimed at conservation, economic and workforce development initiatives.
By facilitating sustainable opportunities for natural economic growth, we hope to see less pressure on the local environment meaning less quarrying of limestone bricks, less cutting down of woodland, less plastic waste and eliminate harmful fishing.
Energy is to be provided by PV solar panels carefully concealed into the landscape to be as discreet as possible. Systems will use less power - LED lighting, candles, sea water air conditioning systems. The proposed construction method is to use little or no concrete, steel or glass.
On the site, sustainable and ecological systems are fundamental.
